![]() ![]() Now, before you cry, “Spoilers!” and clap your hands over your eyes, Abandon most definitely reimagines this myth. Her mother, Demeter, gets so upset each time that she makes the earth barren while her daughter is gone. She swallows about five pomegranate seeds (it depends on the retelling), and these seeds force her to return to the Underworld for that many months out of the year. While down in the Underworld, Hades tricks Persephone into doing what a living soul should never do in the Land of the Dead–eating some of the food. He wants her to become his bride, so he abducts her and drags her down to the Underworld. While Persephone is out in a meadow, picking flowers or something, a chasm splits the earth and out rides Hades, God of the Dead and King of the Underworld. It’s marketed as “the myth of Persephone… darkly reimagined.”įor those not familiar with the myth, Persephone is the daughter of Zeus, King of the Gods, and Demeter, Goddess of the Harvest. ![]() I received an ARC of Abandon from the publisher, and was intrigued enough by the premise to dive in. ![]()

The trajectory itself was the excitement! The strong-willed woman in an implausible fight against sinister forces greater than her. Ten year-old Isaiah doesn't give a damn if it's implausible that the lace-frilled, permed and buxom Charlotte reject her social mores, jump on a ship and start swabbing and mizzen yard-arming. I also read some of the other reviews here for this book, and I have to say, on behalf of ten year-old Isaiah, that you're missing the point. And it has a heroine! And she's good for something besides good manners! Either this is way out of character for me, or perhaps as a ten year old I wasn't a cranky misogynist (unlikely). But for several years after I just started to read YA novels, I thought this book was the epic shit. I can't believe how completely I had forgotten it. This book just flashed into my mind this evening unbidden. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Josh is an Eppie Award winner and a three-time Lambda Literary Award finalist.Ī warrior from the Northlands purchases a young man for purposes both secret and perhaps sinister. ![]() In addition to numerous short stories, novellas, and novels, Josh is the author of the critically acclaimed Adrien English series, including The Hell You Say, winner of the 2006 USABookNews awards for GLBT Fiction. How can we use nature to cultivate an awareness of God? How do we enter a space of reverence, where there are no walls and no ceilings and yet where we find a room we share with Creator Spirit? Merton had pondered this as well that first day walking in the forest: “And I thought: if we only knew how to use this space and this area of sky and these free woods.” Ĭonsidering his reflections on that pivotal day and then how he lived and wrote afterward, I think the answer to this cultivation question comes in three pieces. Since my baptism in 2011 in the Episcopal Church, I’ve often thought about that oneness and about what belonging to Christ means. It looks like a complete oneness with all of creation.
