That is, until Sarah's cute, witty friend Adam starts drawing Kate into the fold-and seems intrigued. Any dreams Kate once had of a perfect summer are ruined. To add to the shame, the Cooper-Melnicks' gorgeous daughter Sarah is a bit like Lady Brett, and she seems less than thrilled to hang out with her new houseguest. If Kate were Lady Brett Ashley, the devastating heroine of Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, she'd spend her summers careering around the Riviera in her coupe, breaking hearts by the dozen-because why not? In reality, Kate's never even had a boyfriend, and she'll be spending the summer abetting her mom's lame ploy to make her dad jealous: running off to Cape Cod and crashing at the seaside home of her wealthy friends, the Cooper-Melnicks. ![]()

![]() In 2017, Adichie gave an interview on Channel 4 News in which she insisted that “when people talk about ‘Are trans women women?’, my feeling is trans women are trans women”. The essay is both a passionate defence of herself against her critics and a blistering polemical reflection on the state of public debate today. Last week, she published a three-part essay entitled It Is Obscene, which went viral, picked up by newspapers across the world. In a world of contested identities, this has inevitably drawn her into a number of controversies, most notably with trans activists. ![]() Much of Adichie’s work wrestles with questions of identity in a globalised world and, in particular, what it means to be black and to be a woman. She has also become a fierce protagonist in debates over racism, feminism and free speech. Through a series of beautifully observed novels that deftly map the fractures of the contemporary world – Purple Hibiscus, Half of a Yellow Sun and Americanah – Adichie has become one of the most eloquent voices of anglophone Africa. We're also reminded that the LGBT and coming-out experiences are different for everyone and also a lifelong journey we take. She also provides us with great diversity - we have lesbian, aromantic, asexual, bisexual, and trans (I use this one as its umbrella term because two of the characters' identity aren't actually stated, I think?) representation as well as the use of neopronouns. I loved the characters as well and Alex writes them unique and with different facets to each of them. So it's pretty much the same formula we're familiar with, but it achieves it in a more modern, adolescent perspective. ![]() The storyline isn't anything unique, especially because it's intended to be a rom-com and references so many of the classic rom-com movies. The Cupid Column delivers with a great storyline and diverse characters. High expectation isn’t a healthy mindset to adapt as it tends to lead to disappointment. I loved them so much, and my love for the previous two books in the series skyrocketed my anticipation and expectations for Jade Legacy. Jade City and Jade War are some of the best books to exist in modern fantasy. Lee must’ve channeled-she must be a true Green Bone warrior-real magic to finish writing this ambitious concluding installment. “Good men are remembered with love by their friends… Great warriors are remembered with awe by their enemies.” Jade Legacy is an all-around masterpiece that certified The Green Bone Saga as my top favorite completed trilogy of all time. I want Sherlock Holmes to be Sherlock Holmes, not some romanticized version and I want a good story! ![]() ![]() I'm picky when it comes to Sherlock Holmes stories. Also, jealousy over a woman that's why professor Moriarty set out to destroy Holmes? Come on! It felt like every time I picked up the book and they mentioned some name I just sat there thinking "who was he again?". ![]() I also had some problem with the story, the biggest problem was that the characters weren't that memorable. Giving Sherlock Holmes a past that really goes against the man that Doyle wrote about is something I just can't abide with. Especially when it comes to Sherlock Holmes, or I should say that all that is ridiculous with this book has to do with Sherlock Holmes, because he is nothing like Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and that's the biggest problem with the book. Predictable and sometimes utterly jaw dropping ridiculous. Now I'm glad that I didn't buy it since it was so predictable that it was hard to enjoy reading the book.
